Bike Storage etc
Hi Everyone,
I’m new to the academy, and have a couple of queries.
Firstly, does anyone have a set of keys for the door that leads to the communal area from the Dalston end of the building? There’s a note on the door saying the latch shouldnt be left on, and i dont fancy being locked out when using the bins etc.
And secondly, where do people park their bikes? There doesnt seem to be any bike storage, considering the size of the block (apart from the main door – but wouldnt feel happy about leaving my bike out there). and there’s posters prohibiting residents from parking in the communal areas. Our flat is up four flights of stairs, which is proving to be a bit of a hassle when it comes to lugging it up and down the stairs.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rehana (flat 22)

Hi Rehana
Welcome to Eastside Academy! I hope you will be very happy here.
Well, I have some good news and some bad news……..the good news is that the key for the courtyard door is the same one that you use for the main door of the Dalston Lane building (I assume you know the code to get back in through the pedestrian gate)………… the bad news is that there is no internal bike storage facility for this building.
The board have looked into this issue in the past but there really isn’t anywhere on the development that would be a suitable place. If you have any suggestions we would be happy to hear them – the cheaper the better!
So, I am afraid that you will have to continue to lug it up the stairs (is a condition of the lease that nothing is stored in the common parts) however I would say that you are right to be cautious about the rack outside but as long as it not a really expensive bike, there is nothing that is “quick release” on your bike and you have a good d-lock, your bike shoud be safe outside but that would be entirely up to you.
I hope this helps!
Cheers, Siobhan
Perhaps some bike racks in the playground area would be a solution… or in the garage at institute place?
That seems like a good solution. I’ve noticed quite a few bikes parked in the alcoves and corridors, yet someone left a note on my bike saying they would ask management to remove it. I’ve called Hackney planning to find out what was stipulated in the original planning consent.
There is an area to the right of the Institute side entrance, which could be used as potential bicycle storage. Just need to add a good padlock to the front and some racks.
The board have explored the bike rack solution in the past and after researching various options it became clear that a good deal of money would need to be spent and there really wasn’t a suitable space that wouldn’t infringe a lessees living space.
Strictly speaking (as previously mentioned) one the terms of the building’s lease is that no equipment is stored in the common parts of the building (this includes the courtyard area) which is why I suspect a director left a note on your bike.
So I hate to be negative but we have a list of priorities of things that need doing around this building and a bike rack isn’t even close right now to making it on the list.
